Grindr's New Notification for the US Open is Perfect for the Gays
Emell Adolphus READ TIME: 1 MIN.
In honor of the US Open, Grindr has introduced a very grunt-tastic notification sound to replace its signature tone.
The "grunt" is an ode to the sound tennis players make when sending the ball back speeding towards there opponent, and the change might be a little jarring if you didn't realize it was coming.
"From short shorts, to fuzzy balls flying in faces, the sport has been a space the gay community loves to play in, yet they haven't had the chance to play out publicly," Grindr said in a statement to Mashable. The app representatives seemed to be referencing former professional tennis player Brian Vahaly, who came out upon retiring from the sport.
The Grindr reps added, "That's changing and culture's catching on with recent phenomenons like the premiere of 'Challengers.'"
According to them, "The grunt noise is a humorous celebration of the often sexually charged sport."
Have you heard it yet? It's the gruntiest of male grunts we have ever heard, but not everyone is a fan of the sound. Some posted that the sudden change scared them.
"Yo...Whoever at @Grindr changed the notification sound to a grunt needs to be arrested immediately!!!," wrote one X commentator.
Another commentator added, "THE NEW TAP SOUNDS ON GRINDR GOTTA GO😭😭😭 that loud ass grunt scared the FUCK outta me at workjebwkwmwlapwkwowp."
