Trans Woman Legally Changes 'Harry Potter' Birth Name

Trans woman Ellen Potter just legally changed her name from the one given to her at birth: Harry. Newsweek reports that 24-year old Brit's birth name was given to her before the famous literary character by controversial author J.K. Rowling overtook the world. Potter tweeted:


The tweet has so far received nearly 100k likes, and several hundred comments in support:



Some of which took aim at Rowling, as the author had issued a number of transphobic comments over the last year:




In a response to one tweet, Potter explains that she chose her new name based on "my favourite movie character from my favourite movie, Ellen Ripley from Alien, 1979."
