Last month Bill Maher said that he wouldn't attend an orgy because there would be guys there. Why he said that was never really explained — discomfort with bisexual men, or he's grower not a shower? If it had been said by Groucho Marx fifty years ago, it would have been funny enough; today, it's homophobic. In a similar vein was his Friday night rant on all things LGBTQ, basically claiming the rise in individuals identifying as LGBTQ is because it is "trendy." And he had a bar chart to prove it!

Former Buzzfeed LGBT news editor Patrick Strudwick responded, "Bill Maher always set my inner warning bells off. His feeble, unfunny attacks on queer and trans people this week are exactly what happens when your 'liberal' sensibilities never venture beyond your own smug privilege. When you either don't do the work or don't have the heart."

Case in point: Maher's concluding bit from his New Rules section on Friday, May 20. "Maher went on a rant that specifically targeted the trans community," reports Giant Freakin' Robot. "The rant basically consisted of the man going into the fact that there are a massive number of children that are now identifying as trans, which he believes to be a phase. Trans kids are coming out as trans because it is now 'trendy.' "

"Bill Maher is being criticized after he claimed on his show that children 'have phases' when addressing a rise in those who identify themselves as being part of the LGBTQ community," reports Complex

"This is not the first time Bill Maher has spouted inaccurate, anti-trans rhetoric. But this time he's targeting youth. Pundits who fearmonger about trans youth and surgeries need to learn the facts. It's not a trend. It's not a phase. Youth are not rushed into medical transition."

What may say it all is that Marjorie Taylor Greene thanked Maher in a tweet.

In his rant, Maher noted that a recent Gallup poll shows an exponential increase in those who self-identify as LGBTQ and that people are allowed to ask, "What's up with that?'

"It wasn't that long ago when adults asked a kid, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'," he said. "They meant what profession."

Decider writes that Maher brought up the trend of putting young children on hormone blockers and how Sweden has decided to end the practice.

"We're literally experimenting on children," Maher said, adding that we don't yet know what the long-term effects of that will be, "although common sense should tell you... there's going to be problems," citing bone density and fertility, among other issues. "This isn't just a lifestyle decision," he added. "It's medical."

Deadline writes: "Giving in to requests for hormone blockers and genital surgery is using children as part of the culture wars," he claimed, and called for waiting.

"If you are a man who wants to experience life without a pair of balls... you can get married," he noted.

"Never forget children are impressionable and very, very stupid," Maher said. "Maybe the boy who thinks he's a girl is just gay — or whatever 'Frazier' was," noting that being a girl "doesn't mean you have to act like a Kardashian. Maybe childhood makes you sad sometimes, and there are other solutions "There are other solutions besides 'Hand me the dick saw.' "

"I understand being trans is different, it's innate," Maher said. "But kids do have phases... Gender fluid? Kids are fluid about everything. If they know at age eight what they wanted to be, the world would be filled with cowboys and princesses." He recalled, "I wanted to be a pirate. Thank God nobody took me seriously and scheduled me for eye removal and peg leg surgery."
