Pastors Want Michigan Gay Marriage Ban to Stand

Monday Feb 24, 2014

In the eve of trial, dozens of pastors from around Michigan are speaking out in favor of the state's ban on gay marriage.

They held a news conference Monday at a Detroit church, saying family stability and the Bible demand marriage only between a man and a woman.

A trial starts Tuesday in Detroit federal court on the future of Michigan's gay marriage ban, which was approved by voters in 2004. Two female nurses who are raising three adopted children are challenging it. They say it violates their rights under the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The Rev. Roland Caldwell says, "The fight is on." He says it's wrong to overturn the will of the people expressed through the ballot box.

The trial could last two weeks.

And what precisely gives them the right to force their religious beliefs on others - including those Christian churches and religious groups who support marriage equality? There is also no evidence to prove that same-sex marriages and same-sex led families, given proper support, are any less stable than the opposite-sex marriages and families. Finally, their reference to the Bible is a matter of opinion. Others considering the Bible in historical and cultural contexts in the days when it was written have come to distinctly different conclusions.

Oh yes! and one other point. Rev. Caldwell says, "it’s wrong to overturn the will of the people expressed through the ballot box." Does that mean he would support restoring segregation and slavery since both those institution had broad public support expressed through the ballot box by electing pro-segregation and pro-slavery legislators. In a democracy, human rights must NEVER ever be subject to the the test of popular support.
