A Chicago Republican, who made headlines earlier for blaming autism, dementia and tornados on gay marriage and abortions, won her primary Tuesday, the Raw Story reports.

Susanne Atanus, of Niles, Ill., won the GOP nomination in the Chicago-area 9th Congressional District with 54 percent of the vote to challenge Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.). She won against David Earl Williams III.

In January, Atanus told the Chicago suburban newspaper, the Daily Herald that she does not "favor abortions" and "I am not in favor of gay rights." She went on to claim that natural disasters and mental disorders, like autism and dementia, are the result of equal rights for LGBT people and because of the legalization of abortions.

"God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions," she said. "Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it's in our military, it will weaken our military. We need to respect God."

She then spoke with the LGBT website the Windy City Times to explain her statements.

"Everybody knows that God controls weather," she said in January. "God is super angry," she added. "Gay marriage is not appropriate, and it doesn't look right, and it breeds AIDS."

It didn't take long for Illinois' Republican Party to cut ties with Atanus. Nevertheless, she refused to listen to her party leaders' call to withdraw from the primary and still managed to win despite the GOP's lack of support and endorsements.

Williams III is calling for a recount of the official results, the Bugle reports. In a Facebook post, he suggested that Schakowsky had her supporters cross party lines and vote for Atanus.

Despite her anti-gay comments, the Raw Story reports Atanus urged the LGBT community to vote for her because her economic views will benefit everyone.

"You can tell the community that I called to reach out to them, that I need them, and they need me," Atanus said, according to the Raw Story.
