Pat Robertson: Gay Men Wear ’Special Rings’ to Spread AIDS

Today during his 700 Club television broadcast, while addressing the concerns of a viewer worried about unknowingly driving an elderly man with AIDS to church, host Pat Robertson told co-host Terry Meeuwsen that gay men cut themselves with special rings when shaking hands with the intent of spreading HIV. Although these remarks were seen during the live broadcast and edited out by Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network in the episode they posted online, Right Wing Watch obtained and posted the video clip (below)

Robertson's comments were in response to a viewer who wrote in to ask

"My Sunday School class was asked to give transportation for a man from a nursing home to Sunday services because 'His elderly father could not drive anymore.' I drove him 20 plus times over several months. I found out 2 weeks ago he is dying of AIDS. I think those driving him should have been told his diagnosis in a private way. A few people in church knew; I did not. I feel deceived - what if we had had an accident? Did someone have a moral obligation to tell the drivers the truth? I haven't been back to church since I found out. I'm going somewhere else until I sort this out."

Initially Robertson's response showed a fundamental ignorance in how HIV is transmitted. He then went into a homophobic claim, outrageous even by his own standards.

"I used to think it was transmitted by saliva and other things, now they say it may be sexual contact." the 83 year old televangelist and 1988 GOP presidential hopeful said, continuing "You know what they do in San Francisco, some in the gay community there they want to get people so if they got the stuff they'll have a ring, you shake hands, and the ring's got a little thing where you cut your finger [...] Really. It's that kind of vicious stuff, which would be the equivalent of murder."

This is far from the first or even most audacious claim the Christian media mogul has made against the LGBT population. As reported in Time, in September 2011, two days after the attack on the World Trade Center, he and guest Jerry Falwell credited the incident to divine retribution for abortionists, the ACLU and gays and lesbians secularizing America.

Ten years later, Robertson claimed that abortion was a conspiracy invented by lesbians to put themselves on an equal playing field with straight women. In May of 2013, when discussing hate crimes, Robertson compared gays to rapists, murderers and thieves.

As reported onMediaite - After the story made the rounds on the web, RightWingWatch's video of the exchange was removed from YouTube under a CBN copyright claim. The "AIDS ring" portion of the interview was also conspicuously removed from CBN's online version of the 700 Club broadcast.

omg dumbest thing i have heard all day. Seriously.

  • Harshan, 2013-08-28 08:35:58

The biblical penalty for bearing false witness is death. Mr Robertson has no excuse for not knowing that.

Hate speech is illegal in Canada and Britain, but it is legal in the US. What is illegal is incitement to violence. Call it "incitement to violence," which it is, and the right wing, even with their tenuous, narcissistic grasp of reality, can’t accuse us of wanting to make thoughts into crimes. They also can’t complain that their "freedom" to impose their "religious" convictions du jour is being infringed, because they would lose followers. Very, very few of the rank and file would affirm that incitement to violence is a religious value.

The ring idea wouldn’t work. When my partner w dying of AIDS, he became hemiplegic, and we were living in a third-world country with poor medical care. I think they called it the "USA."We had accidents

Not my comment. I removed a catheter and got it in the face, I changed diapers and found my rubber gloves were in shreds, and 20 years later I am HIV-. The ring wouldn’t work.

Oy vey! This would be funny if it were not for the fact that such hatefulness and fear-mongering, cloaked with religion actually attracts support! And to think that people donate good money to support this man and his silliness. Even worse, to think that this pseudo-Christian gets charitable tax status (an effective indirect taxpayer subsidy to spout such nonsense!

This article above is a big fat LIE!!! I watched Tuesday’s 700 club TV show and Pat Robinson never said anything about a ring and gays trying to spread aids in San Francisco. It appears that the hate, prejudgement and the fact that none of you even watched the 700 club on Tuesdays is in your comments. I suggest that all of you clean your own house before you start to clean others.

Oh avenger. I don’t know if the he said that on tues. Or not. It doesn’t matter when. He did say it. I just googled it and found it on the Huntington post but more importantly, THE VIDEO IF HIM SAYING THAT IS RIGHT THERE ON YOUTUBE for all to see. Just search youtube for it and you’ll see. Then, you can post your apology here. Unless of course you are one of those fake religious hateres like he and so many others are. By the way, I don’t watch religious bullshit shows because I don’t buy into that false and hateful, destructive garbage. Niw, let’s sit back and see what you are really about. Apology or further uninformed diatribes. :)

Good grief ok yes in certain circumstances people should be informed , if you get into an accident and have to help someone general rule of thumbs is to be careful of blood and bodily fluids. This cutting themselves with rings to spread aids is insane to put it lightly. They themselves do not want aids , aids is only spread by blood most gay men get them though blood transfusions or by giving blood anyone of us can be exposed at anytime and you do NOT have to be gay to have aids. the end

"Avenger" may also recall times in the past when Mr. Robertson made certain predictions of disasters, predictions that proved not to be true. However, whether they did turn out true or not, the fact is that making such predictions falls into the Biblical classification of "divination" and can be considered witchcraft according to the Old Testament. Sorry, but Pat Robertson is a charlatan.

(DerekJA)- I also googled Anderson Cooper’s Video and watched it. Either the Video was expertly altered or Pat Robinson said what the Video showed that he said. Anderson Cooper stated that allegedly Pat was told about the Ring Story by SAN Francisco Security. Pat was passing the story forward. I do retract the statement that "the article is a big fat lie" for now but no Apology is required because I stand on the fact that I didn’t see or hear anything the article said happened on the 700 Club show I saw. There are at least three plus 700 club showings on DirectV Monday thru Friday and I do not watch all of them. He could have said the Ring Story on one of the other shows. I personally thought if you see one you seen them all. I am sure that you are smart enough to realize that mental illness can hit Gay people just anybody else and that the Ring Story could possibly be true after all I, you, and Anderson Cooper wasn’t there to proof or disproof it but San Francisco Security was and mentally ill people do crazy things.

  • WayGay, 2013-09-03 22:57:19

And why is it Miss Avenger is hanging out on a gay wire service? Jacking off to the photos while pretending to do churchy activities? Please, then700 magic show is like watching senile people trying to figure out how to
