Ousted Lesbian Den Mom Delivers Petition to Scouts

Thursday Jul 19, 2012

IRVING, Texas (AP) - An Ohio woman ousted as a den mother because she is a lesbian has delivered a petition with 300,000 signatures to the Boy Scouts of America headquarters urging the organization to reinstate her.

Jennifer Tyrrell also wants the group to abandon its policy of excluding gays, which the organization reaffirmed Tuesday.

Tyrrell wore a tan Scout uniform as she arrived Wednesday at the Boy Scouts national offices in Irving with her partner and two children, including a 7-year-old Cub Scout.

Tyrrell, who was carrying three boxes filled with the petitions, then went into a private meeting with representatives of the 102-year-old organization. Tyrrell presented the same petitions to the organization at its annual convention in Orlando, Fla., in May.

Tyrrell is from Bridgeport, Ohio.

This woman should stop wasting her time, talent and resources. As Rscluff put it in the other Boy Scout article...she should start her own group. She obviously has the love and compassion and ability to draw people to action. I would donate to her group if she started one.

What an ignorant comment.what have you done to stop the hate? Check out the Woodcraft folk...founded in 1925 as a non religious non flag waiving alternative to the fascist boy scouts

I donate time and money and speak out loud whenever I see mistreatment of people because they are gay. And you?

Thank you for the information on the woodcraft folk they seem to be a great option. I laugh at the quote from the man that formed the group. He was a co founder of the scouts but left because "it was to militant!" as a leader he wanted to teach inclusion and peace neither of which the scouts we’re teaching. Amazing for a man in the 1920’s to say they were in the wrong and here we are even still telling them they are in the wrong. I hope that the woodcraft folk as an organization can take hold and surpass the hate group "scouts" I personally will look into and try forming a group with my son here and invite other local children/families of all ages to join.

To clarify the woodcraft folk are a European group they are well established in Europe I hope it’s a group that can compete here in the US. Sorry for the wrong information
