One Million Moms Attacks JC Penney - This Time Over Lesbian Couple in Ad

The conservative anti-gay group One Million Moms, which is affiliated with the American Family Association, is criticizing JC Penney once again for including a lesbian couple in its May catalog, according to reports in the Hollywood Reporter and other media.

The advertisement features Wendi with her mom and her mom's partner and daughters. The text reads "creativity, oil paints" and "freedom of expression."

"You'll often find Wendi, her partner, Maggie, and daughters elbow-deep in paint, clay or mosaics," the ad also says.

One Million Moms attacked the department store company for the ad and are asking supporters to call or visit their local JC Penney and complain to the store manager.

"Local managers are more likely to listen to your concerns and pass them along to the corporate office," the group says in a statement.

In February the organization targeted JC Penney for hiring Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman and asked people to boycott the company.

"DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there," One Million Moms said.

One Million Moms provided phone numbers to JC Penney and wanted its supporters to call and request that the DeGeneres be fired.

The comedian, however, fired back at the group on her talk show.

"Normally, I try not to pay attention to my haters -- but this time I'd like to talk about it, because my haters are my motivators," she said. "This organization doesn't think I should be the spokesperson because I'm gay. They wanted to get me fired, and I'm proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson. Which is great news for me because I also need some new crew socks. I'm really going to clean up with this discount."

Despite their valiant efforts, One Million Moms announced its defeat in early March. The group said it would no longer focus on getting DeGeneres fired and is moving on to other issues.

"But we have heard back from so many of our members," Monica Cole of One Million Moms said. "We have heard back from men and women -- not just moms -- saying they will no longer shop there at JC Penney, as long as Ellen DeGeneres is their spokesperson."

But it seems as though the group can't break away from slamming JC Penney. One Million Moms is once again resorting to old tactics and is urging people to contact JC Penney's corporate department as well as asking supporters to send emails to the company in order to complain about the gay-friendly ad.

"Last time OMM contacted JC Penney store managers, we were brushed off," the organization states on its website. "Some even experienced in person the store manager saying 'Thank you' and walking off while their customer and our concerned members were in mid-sentence. OMM has been told that JCP corporate office told store managers to say 'Thank you' and then walk away. If they want our business, then we will not be ignored!"

Obviously they don’t care about losing members of the One Million Mom’s as customers. Also, everyone reading this article should be aware that this group does not have a million members.

  • , 2012-05-04 14:21:56

Good article, anything we could do to support JCP, please include in future articles. Thanks fort he above comment; the group does not have a million members.

  • , 2012-05-05 06:21:36

    Good going JCP! :)

  • , 2012-05-05 07:58:07

I work at JCP. We’ve only had one customer complain. We just laughed it off.

  • , 2012-05-05 12:09:26

I am disgusted by their decision to advocate homosexuality in their adds. Shame on them, Personnel preference should remain personal. I will no longer shop with JC Penney... BOYCOT!!!

  • , 2012-05-05 14:20:58

JC Penney does not need your closed minded bigotted ass in their stores. They got open minded heterosexuals and the gay community with a disposable income to support them. Go ahead continue to shop at Walmart which were you belong.

  • , 2012-05-05 15:01:20

I’ve been a loyal JC Penny customer most of my adult life, often influencing family, friends, & co-workers to shop there, no more. Freedom of sexual choice is one thing, but blatantly advocating before our children what is considered by many to be deviate sexual behavior is wrong. I ignored DeGeneres, but not this. Maybe because more people didn’t stand up to the "Ellen" advertisement JC Penny got more bold. This is too far. There needs to be another change in the executives & board members because apparently the the latest changes produced this. I will JOIN, SUPPORT, and TRY to ADD to THE BOYCOTT at every opportunity! Maybe they don’t have an actual million Mom members but remember gays only account for about 7% of the population while those with moral values account for well over 50%. Homosexuality only appears to have more influence because of the support of the liberal media & business’s like this. Gays boycotted Target, let’s return the favor.

  • , 2012-05-05 15:20:02

Being straight does not automatically make you moral. Adolf Hitler is a heterosexual.

  • , 2012-05-05 16:11:40

No, but it’s one less ’immorality’ to deal with. You guys always use Adolph for your comparisons out of billions and billions of heterosexuals. So, should we compare all gays to pediphile priest or those ’drive bys’that solicit our teenage sons on the side of the road? Homosexuality is a deviancy from the norm and the natural sexual choice, and just a sexual choice. It is not the same as a minority race, it’s only a minority sexual preference. Penny’s should stop promoting it like it’s something special. I suppose there must be a number of gays in the management, why else would they try to revamp the company by appealing to a very small percent of the populace while alienating a majority?

  • , 2012-05-05 16:58:44

According to the bible licking your wife’s p... Or f.... Her in the arse or the wife sucking the husband cock is a deviant behavior...jc penney is not promoting our sexual life but our social life. We are part and have been part of society for millions of years...and we are not going away...we boycotted target for only one reason and that is their support of bigotry and ignorance... Resisting is futile...as I previously stated go back to Walmart which is where you belong.

  • , 2012-05-05 19:06:11

I’m not supportive of any of those behaviors either and they’re also not in Penny’s advertising scheme. I also note that bondage, giant penis’s, & other sexual themes as seen in your gay pride parade are not used in JCPenny ads, thankfully. No, sexual immorality has only been around for thousands of years not millions and it WILL go away someday. From your vulgar ’hate speech’ and your ’Walmart’ bigotry I’d say the real reason you boycotted Target was because they didn’t SUPPORT your lifestyle, nothing to do with THEIR ignorance. I do shop Walmart occasionally, along with other department stores, I just won’t support your JCPenny’s anymore, my choice. Mr/Ms/Whatever Borg, assimilation is a just a choice too and billions have resisted thousands in this for millennia.

  • , 2012-05-05 22:50:26

The reason I hate Walmart is nothing to do with this conversation. I hate Walmart because it is destroying our communities with their cheap chinese merchandise, putting small businesses out and continue to pay very low wages to their employees. Being gay is no more a lifestyle than being heterosexual. One is born homosexual it is not choice. By the what boring sex life you must have though I do not care but the giant cocks or the things you mentioned doing it in one position must be very boring indeed. No wonder you are a miserable lot. Once again, we are not going away, we are everywhere, we are doctors, policemen, firemen, truckers, we are everywhere, we are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, grandparents...etc etc...glad you are not shopping a jcp...the store just got a little classier.

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-05-06 01:18:40

Unbelievable how hateful, hurtful and holier than thou...these bitter, unfulfilled mothers can be... All in the name of Gawd. Geesh.

  • , 2012-05-07 05:07:28

I am.do glad this company is has evolved enough to realize that the scum of the heterosexual population isn’t worth their small fraction of disposable income they have. Lol. A million moms should change their name to a million douche bags.

  • , 2012-05-07 06:55:05

Are the above comments really directed to an Ad representing a happy family? Shouldnt we all, straight

  • , 2012-05-07 13:06:41

Walmart is the only choice for many elderly and others on fixed income. They’re stuck with the cheap Chinese merchandise because of the American Unions greed. Not everyone can afford your quaint shoppes either. They also pay above minimum wage and with benefits. Sex isn’t boring when it’s done for intimacy or reproduction and that’s not limited to only 1 position. It’s all about the quality not the quantity. It must be boring when you run out of vulgar things to do when that’s your main focus, especially since you can only recruit not reproduce. Being homosexual is no more a ’born to be’ issue than being criminal, liberal, political, or any other lifestyle choice. You’re born with either female or male parts and what you chose to do with your urges IS still just a choice. You are everywhere but not as many as you try to make everyone believe. If you were so special I’d think after "millions of years" you wouldn’t still be a very small minority. You’re also not MY doctor, teacher, etc... nor a member of my family. That is another choice. Most of us don’t care what you chose to do or if you want to show it in public, we just don’t want you ’recruiting’ or trying to influence our children and we don’t wish to support your efforts with our money, that is OUR choice. Stop demanding everyone accept you into their lives when you’ve chosen a path outside the norm. This choice does not make us a bigot, we ALL chose everyday how we will live, where we will shop, and just like politics, religion, & careers we teach that to our children. If you want to see the real ’haters’ & ’bigots’ just look in the mirror, or just read the gay post on this article.

  • , 2012-05-08 02:48:28

I don’t ask for much in life. I’ve postponed my own life to be there for my family and I like to believe that I’m a good person. I always look at things from other people’s perspectives and I try to get the whole picture before I decide something. I’m a reasonable, respectful, and, overall, a very kind and giving person; anyone would say that about me. I’m also gay. I’m just trying to live out my life and and enjoy it, and I wish everyone would enjoy their lives as well. Everyone is entitled to that as a human being. So, when I find something that is connected with the gay community, I generally get excited because we honestly don’t have many places to get good entertainment or news. But, as I lie here and read negative comments about ME, as a homosexual, ON a homosexual site, it hurts. I’ve never purposely done anything to crush another person’s spirit or to ban a simple acknowledgment of their existence. I am a family person. I just spent the day taking care of two of my nephews and my niece and I’m exhausted. My experiences aren’t any different from a straight person’s. I get frustrated, hurt, and I have morals. Being gay doesn’t mean you don’t have morals. I was taught to treat others as I wanted to be treated, and I teach that same thing to my niece and nephews. Is that really too much to ask? I’m not forcing you to accept me into your life, I certainly don’t want to be in your life if I’d cause you distress, but I just hope you’ll treat me as you’d want yourself to be treated if you were in my position. I’m not here to bash, support, or discredit anyone or their personal beliefs. I’m a tired person who just wants to be left alone.

  • , 2012-05-08 06:52:11

I speak four languages but idiot is not them and you sir or madam are an idiot...and in the words of Dame Edna..."I mean it in the nicest way....I just hope that if you as fortunate enough to have homosexual son, daughter, nice nephew they do not end up hanging from a rope or bleeding themselves to death from all the hate you harbor for them for just being as you say not "the norm" ....good day.

  • , 2012-05-09 03:55:33

Are you sure I’m not your teacher, doctor or relative?if I were I’m pretty sure telling you would not be an option considering how much hats most of you breeders seem to have

  • , 2012-05-11 14:50:36

We always shop at JCPenney and have considered it a family oriented store. It will be sad to not shop and support the store we’ve loved for so long but we will if they are going to advertise gay couples. His help us. Where does it end?

  • , 2012-05-11 15:17:14

If you really "loved" something or someone, their beliefs won’t make you feel otherwise. Think about this: Did God continue to love Adam & Eve and their descendants) even though they disobeyed him? Why should God to continue to love you when you make mistakes (sin), when you don’t treat others the same way?

  • , 2012-05-11 16:24:11

These idiots are talking as if there is an explosion of lesbians invading the stores. They are still advertising to everyone. Perhaps, there should not be any couples in their ads just single people, so no one gets offended. Change your mind about someone for once or something for once. Open your mind to knew ideas...unless their ads show a woman licking another woman’s ... there is nothing distasteful nor questionable about a picture of a happy family lesbian, gay or otherwise.

  • , 2012-05-11 17:13:12

The lesbians are coming, the lesbians are coming....

  • , 2012-05-12 09:40:07

My partner are going shopping today at JCP in support, and tell the store manager thank you.

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-05-12 18:22:15

This is too funny... I don’t particularly like to shop at J.C. Penney, but I feel compelled to pull out my dusty old card and go on a shopping spree just to say thank you for ignoring the million moronic moms.

  • fernsky, 2012-05-12 19:56:45

Anonymous I hope I’ll see y’all on anonymous pride June 31st.

  • , 2012-05-12 21:30:57

    With bells on!!!

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-05-13 12:14:53

Not sure why these supposed "straight" people are even reading Edge let alone leaving ignorant, hurtful comments. The saddest and most ironic part of all is that odds are good their children are the bullied gay kids we want to save from hurting themselves.

  • , 2012-05-14 03:32:50

The one million moms are right about one thing we dont shop at jc penny but i deff am going to start!!! More stores need to be as progressive as jc pennys:)

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-05-14 14:10:30

Lol... It’s not like they were spending that much on polyester pantsuits, housecoats and decorations for their trailers.

  • , 2012-05-17 19:12:56

I find it funny that anti-gay groups are so ’conservative’ and yet all they can do is focus on our sex lives.

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-05-19 01:19:49

    Lol...so true.

  • , 2012-05-21 15:52:32

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the couple I’m gay myselfIf "god" doesn’t

  • , 2012-05-21 15:58:19

My names dillon andThere’s absolutely nothing wrong with the couple I’m gay myself andIf "god" doesn’t approve then why hasn’t anything abnormal happened, let alone that in human nature there’s nothing wrong with being gay its just the fucking social media that makes it wrong. I just think its steered out of the door and makes the gay community look wrong bit in relaity we can be the most loving and helpful to this world

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-05-21 20:51:49

    Well put Dillon.

  • , 2012-05-28 08:58:30

One day, hopefully soon, these dinosaurs will be extinct and GLBTs will be treated fairly everywhere, by everyone.

  • , 2012-06-06 16:22:46

I find it so funny that "One Million" moms do not have even close to that many members, are they trying to make themselves look bigger then what they really are????? I think so :) and oddly enough they have no contact information to get ahold of them, are they scared????? I think so :) So keep it going "One Million" moms, oh and by the way I am a gay associate at JCP and I have no plans of going anywhere. and if you want to start speaking from the bible, here is one for you that you are all doing, Thou shall not judge. So keep it going and see how far you get.

  • fernsky, 2012-06-06 20:57:02

I wonder the comment if I made one and memory tells me I did is not available to me whereas all them anonymous are there printed in full with some to say I have nothing to say except that this guy Newsom mayor of San Francsico used the in your face argument and said "better live with it". de Generisis another one I never saw anything or shows with her, however she took a stand on same sex marriage and I admired her for this, when I mentioned a gay victory in the US in a gay bar in Belgium I was told they couldn’t care less of what happened in the US, I ain’t gay so get out they told me, in Chicago I met a gay kid from Arizona, he knew me since I knew some of his family in Arizona and he got me to a gay bar in Chicago and these people told me about them and the sufferings, he mentoned the suicide rate with these "good looking women" at the bar who were men to start with. Later on I was in Flagstaff and inquired, and no one knew I heard he was back in Flag, I was told not to bother, I insisted till I was told off by the family telling me it was a great shame but he had contracted aids with some girls in Chicago. I’m not Jewish, but after a Jewish wedding in Chicago I went for some food where I met this server who knew people I knew in Arizona and this is how I ended in a gay bar in Chicago with this kid, Later on I met one of his relatives (this kid was not dying time but nobody would mention him) it was later I met one of his relatives in San Diego and he was an F-18 pilot landing on the USS constellation, there’s the other friend who was into eletronic warfare on the boat next door, the USS Jouet I mean next dock, also from AZ and yes I’ve been close to the military US that is being Belgian. If I was gay, I never looked gay so I was left alone on the groups, were I gay it is no one’s business as I believe sex being part of a human life and Julius Cesar using whatever was available proved it, was that before the sancticity of marriage?

  • fernsky, 2012-06-06 21:01:50
